Dr. Estella Habal, Professor Emerita, taught courses such as Filipino American experience, Asian American women, Asian American history, in the Asian American Studies Program at San Jose State University from 1999-2014. She has published San Francisco’s International Hotel: Mobilizing the Filipino American Community in the Anti-Eviction Movement (Temple University Press, 2007) which has become an essential text in courses on the history of the Filipino American community and the Asian American movement of the 1970s. Her upcoming projects include the history of the first generation of Filipino activists in the United Farm Workers union, the history of the formation of Filipino Masonic lodges and workers organizations, including newspapers, and student clubs. She serves on the advisory board of the Manilatown Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit organization, that continues the legacy of the activism in the Filipino and broader community.
